'Raajneeti' not a dry political drama

Director Prakash Jha is hell bent on making his forthcoming film a complete entertainer. He recently did a certain amount of spicing up by shooting some scenes with the lead pair Ranbir Kaporo and Katrina Kaif.

On Monday Ranbir and Katrina did some additional shooting for 'Raajneeti' at Mona Shourie's Future Studios long after their dates for the film had dried up.

'We did some patchwork shooting on Monday, close-ups, etc. Yes. It's for the betterment of the end-product. We all want 'Rasjneeti' to be a big success. Katrina and Ranbir have surrendered themselves completely to the project and will do whatever is required,' Jha told IANS.

And the hit jodi is more than willing to shoot extra days to ensure the product gets them maximum attention. Ranbir, just back from Las Vegas rushed to the shooting. Closeups and continuity shots were shot with the duo.

'We certainly don't want to pitch 'Raajneeti' as a dry political drama. Ranbir and Katrina are big commercial stars. We want their fans to see our film as an entertainer.

'At an edited length of about three hours, we want viewers to be glued to the edge of their seats. I wouldn't call it a multi-star cast film. I'd call it a multi-actor film,' said Jha.

A sizzling music video featuring Ranbir, Katrina and Arjun Rampal is also on the cards.

Katrina fine-tunes her Hindi diction for her role in 'Rajneeti'

The hot and happening Katrina Kaif, who has been delivering one hit after the other for the past three years in one of the longest-running success spells for a heroine, is finally doing some lip-service for herself. Yes, the hot babe of Bollywood appears to have decided to silence all her detractors who keep on harping over her command over rashtra bhasha.
The gorgeous girl, who lacks the prowess to speak fluent Hindi, is said to be working over time while mouthing the dialogues for her role in Prakash Jha's upcoming film ‘Rajneeti’.

The effort is apparently necessitated as she plays a politician in the film and has to utter really lengthy dialogues in almost-pure Hindi. During breaks in shootings, Kat is seen taking Hindi lessons with Prakash so that when the shoot began, she would be able to deliver her lines perfectly.
The ever-sincere Kaif girl has a Hindi-Urdu tutor with her to accompany her during shootings.

Reports say that the reason fro Katrina brushing up her Hindi dialect for her role in the film is probably because Kat is so impressed by her role that she believes that not dubbing in her own voice will hinder her chances of winning the national award for best actress. Towards this objective, she is leaving no stone unturned!
Having worked with Nana Patekar, Ranbir Kapoor, Manoj Bajpai and Naseeruddin Shah, stars who are very fluent in Hindi in the film, the nuances of the language might have rubbed off on Kat too, it is believed. Maybe, as and when she wins that coveted national award for the first time, she might give her first Hindi interview sans English.

Rajneeti to change perception of politics

After essaying the role of a youth leader in Yuva and a political enforcer in Omkara Bollywood actor Ajay Devgn is all set for his third innings in onscreen politics with Rajneeti, which he says will change the way people see our leaders.
"I think the perception of politics will change with Rajneeti.... In both positive and negative ways.. But more in a negative way," Ajay told PTI without divulging more details about the actual plot of the yet to be released film.
"In Omkara, I had played a General, a political enforcer of a gang that carries out crimes for a local politician...
In Yuva, I was a student leader and now in Rajneeti, I am in the system," he said.
"This character that I play has no resemblances to any politician in real.

I play the role of Karna, who is on the wrong side... And knows that he could be on the right side but decides to keep a promise and stay there. He does politics only because he has to," he said.
Ajay is also quick to clarify that the movie has not been modelled on any particular politician or party.
"It does not portray any Indian politician, political party or any incident in the past or present. It is a high drama with politics as a background."

My character in 'Rajneeti' resembles Duryodhana: Manoj Bajpai

Manoj Bajpai says his character in forthcoming 'Raajneeti' is very similar to Duryodhana from the Hindu epic Mahabharata - he is powerful, regal and politically motivated.

'I am playing Virendra Pratap Singh. My role is almost like Duryodhana in Mahabharata,' Manoj told IANS.

'Duryodhana always felt he had inherited the power his father had. He is regal; he is somebody who is not cheap. He is someone who will not let things go so easily. He is one whose mind is politically motivated and can go to any extent to get things done. This is what gives him high and nothing else,' the actor said.

Manoj, known for his power-packed performances in movies like 'Satya', 'Zubeidaa', 'Kaun' and 'Pinjar', adds that every character in the film directed by Prakash Jha has grey shades.

'That is the beauty of the Mahabharata too. No one is pure in the Mahabharata and that is the message of the Mahabharata and that is the message of this film too. Everyone is doing his or her duty, everyone is making mistakes and at the same time everyone is a good human being,' he said.

Apart from Manoj, the dark political drama also stars talented performers like Ajay Devgn, Naseeruddin Shah, Nana Patekar, Arjun Rampal, Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif.

Manoj says audiences will be able to relate to various incidents in the movie.

'The story of 'Raajneeti' resembles the politics of each and every state of our country. We all love to discuss politics. We love to discuss each and every government policy. Love to appreciate or criticise some (political) figure or (government) policy.'

'As an Indian we love to think that we are better than the representatives we have voted for. I think this film has done justice to the subject it has taken as it has gone deep into the issue it is dealing with,' he said.

He says Jha deals with the 'thirst for power' in the movie.

'Politics starts with that and ends with that in our country. This is the politics you are subjected to in daily life; so you will surely be able to identify with some incident or the other,' he added.

The actor is known for choosing his character names in a few of his films. So, did he choose Virendra Pratap Singh for his character in 'Raajneeti' too?

'(Laughs) Prakash Jha has a fertile mind. He has a great grip on the issue. He already had the fantastic idea about who should be named what,' said Manoj.

'I have borrowed the look and character of someone I know personally. He is a non-political person,' the actor added.

He is all praise for Katrina's hard work in the political thriller.

'Katrina is representing the change in politics in the film. She has really put in lots of hard work. She has done her dubbing also...I really enjoyed her company,' said Manoj.

Asked about his views on politics, he said: 'I am apolitical. I have been brought up in a fashion where reading newspapers and watching news channels were a daily routine. I maintain that even today, so that I have an idea about what's happening in our country. Prakash-ji has contested elections; so we often discussed politics on the sets.'

Katrina and Ranbir

They made a dream pair in ‘Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani’ and have continued the magic going in the upcoming film ‘Raajneeti’. Yes, we are talking about the dream pair of Katrina Kaif and Ranbir Kapoor, undoubtedly the most-sought after heroine and hero in Bollywood at present. The two stars are said to be sharing an amazing on-screen and off-screen chemistry.

Ranbir, who has just returned from U.S. after shooting non-stop for over two-and-half months for the film ‘Anjaana Anjani’ opposite Priyanka Chopra, is said to be very upset at the long break he had to endure away from Katrina.

Katrina is said to have made a ‘secret’ trip to U.S. to just meet him and as the actress was discreet and made sure that she stayed away from the sets where the shooting was going on, and no-one spotted her there along with Ranbir.

When Katrina met film's leading lady Priyanka Chopra, she reportedly panicked and the first thing that struck her was that the news could reach home. It is also said that as Kat wasn’t on talking terms with Priyanka, he impressed on Ranbir to keep Priyanka silent about having seen her (Kat) there.

After his return, Ranbir Kapoor has been dropping in quite often at Kaif's home. The pair has now signed their third film together, it is rumoured. While Katrina’s side has staunchly refuted that she visited U.S. last month, Ranbir remained unavailable for comment.

This is the name of the film I am intending to make as my next after India 24/7.
It’s inspired by the story of Paritala Ravi from Andhra Pradesh who got assassinated in January 2005. Even though the actual incidents of the story happened and the related characters existed in south India, I decided to make it in Hindi because I strongly felt that the sheer uniqueness of the story deserves to be told to a much wider audience.
Paritala Ravi was arguably the most feared individual ever in the history of the blood-ridden faction politics of South India. He was a prime accused in innumerable murder cases and also survived numerous assassination attempts, the most brutal of which happened on a quiet Friday afternoon in November 1997 when a road near Rama Naidu Studio in Hyderabad was turned into a death field by a bomb which killed 26 people but failed to get its intended target Ravi.
I, in the course of my life have read biographies of various people and have also come to know through various sources the life stories of many highly dangerous men including that of Velupalli Prabhakaran the LTTE Chief to Pablo Escobar the Columbian drug lord to our very own Dawood Ibrahim but all those stories pale in comparison to Ravi’s life story.

How Ravi, a soft-spoken shy guy under a force of certain circumstances retreated into the jungles, became a rebel and how he mounted a volcano of violence to avenge his father’s and brother’s deaths and how in time he became a folklore legend and eventually a minister in N.T.Ramarao’s Cabinet reads more grippingly than any fiction writer anywhere in the world can ever imagine.
Ravi’s name sent shivers up the spines of not only his rivals but even the law enforcement agencies. He was a rebel, a feudal lord, a robin hood, a killer of hundreds and saviour of thousands till the day he was gunned down by a death squad allegedly put together by his arch rival Suri who wanted to avenge his father’s and brother’s deaths, in a bizarre déjà vu.
I have been following Ravi’s rise to power since long, but I first heard of Suri only after the bomb explosion at Rama Naidu Studios. I was both amazed and chilled to see that even after being confined to a prison cell, how the fire of Suri’s vengeance continued to burn unabated for 7 long years till he finally succeeded, armed with nothing but a severe desire to kill Ravi as his one and only weapon. In my research for the film I have met various associates of Paritala Ravi and Suri and also their family members.

I have also met Suri who is presently lodged in Anantpur jail on trial for the killing of Ravi and what I finally managed to piece together from all the various police records and eye witness accounts is the most fascinating story I have ever heard or could hope to hear in my life. This is the story of a man’s phenomenal rise to power and a story of the most intense blood curdling conflict ever heard of between 2 individuals and it is also the ultimate statement on the oft heard disastrous consequences of a fatal mixture of caste, crime, family feuds and politics.
I decided to film this story at one stretch and release it in 2 parts about 3 months from each other, a first of its kind ever attempted in the history of Indian cinema. I want to call the films Rakta Charitra- I and Rakta Charitra-II. Why I want to make it in 2 parts is because, the sheer drama and content the story possesses is so incredibly rich and of such high magnitude that it is not possible to do justice to do it in a film which is lesser than 5 hours. Also Ravi’s life can be broadly divided into 2 parts from the time how circumstances created his rise to how he created circumstances that felled him.
I believe that Rakta Charitra is going to be the most defining film of my career not because of how well I will make it but sheerly because of the material I have at my hand. To put it simply I don’t have to work hard to make it well but I have to work hard to spoil it.

Rs.30 Crores budget for ‘Rakta Charitra’

Ram Gopal Varma’s new movie ‘Rakta Charitra’ is being made at a budget of Rs.30 crores if sources are to be believed.

As informed by RGV about the two part movie of the story, it is not clear if the budget is for both the parts put together or just the first part! With Tamil’s happening star Suriya acting along with Bollywood hero Vivek Oberoi, RGV has not compromised in experimenting their looks, clothes and everything tangible.

Being a master in showing crime related movies on celluloid like ‘Satya’, ‘Company’, ‘Sarkar’ and many more, it would be interesting to see the real life story of Paritala Ravi and Maddelu Cheruvu Suri on celluloid especially in RGV’s style.

Vivek gets candid, admits his past mistakes

It’s a well-known fact that the maverick filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma and actor Vivek Oberoi have become inseparable pals during the making of their upcoming film ‘Rakta Charitra’.
The two, who fell out with each other after the debacle of Darna Zaroori Hai, seem to have buried their hatchet and ill-will and are said to be planning at least two more films together.
On the sets, the duo even converses in Telugu, Varma’s mother tongue, which Vivek was made to learn for his role in ‘Rakta Charitra’. Vivek candidly admits that Ramuji (RGV) ‘picked him up from nowhere’ and made him a star overnight. Incidentally, Vivek Oberoi is the only protege whom Varma has chosen to patch up with.
The likes of Manoj Bajpai, Aftab Shivdasani, Randeep Hooda and Mohit Ahlawat, all RGV products, have nothing to do with the film maker as on date. Verma, when asked whether a rapprochement between him and Manoj Bajpai was being worked out, replied that he hadnt’ yet stopped down to such levels.
Meanwhile, Vivek is gearing up for the release of ‘Prince’, which is rumoured to be a remake of the 1960s’ Shammi Kapoor starrer Prince. “Many think it’s a remake of Shammiji’s film or a costume drama. Let them just wait to see what it is about. I just can’t reveal the plot at this present juncture,” says Vivek.

Suriya not a part of 'Raktha Charitra'!

Till yesterday, the big buzz about Ramgopal Varma’s ‘Raktha Charitra’ was that Suri’s character will be portrayed by Tamil star suriya and the first stills of Suriya were also out in the market. Hiding high in the Tamil industry, Suriya is no doubt making an entry in Bollywood with this movie Raktha Charitra but sources clarify that he will appear towards the climax of the first part and will be the protagonist in the second part.

So, that means Suriya’s prominence in first part of Raktha Charitra is almost nil and even they say that, he is not a part of Raktha Charitra 1. The film also features Priyamani as Suriya's wife and Radhika Apte opposite Vivek Oberoi. Shatrugan Sinha portrays late Tollywood giant and Andhra CM NT Rama Rao.

Heavy starring for a Tollywood story folks…

Ram Gopal Varma, Vivek patch up

Ram Gopal Varma, with whom Vivek Oberoi is working in 'Rakta Charitra', is one of the many people the actor fell out with. But now the two have become the closest of friends and are planning at least two more films together.

The two even converse in Telugu, Varma's mother tongue, which Vivek learnt for 'Rakta Charitra'.

'Ramuji was pissed off. And rightly so. He had picked me up from nowhere and made me a star. He was embittered by the way I turned. I lost a lot of my friends. And that included Ramuji,' Vivek said emotionally.

Now the two are back on an even pitch and are planning at least two more films together.

Incidentally, Vivek is the only protege whom Varma has chosen to patch up with. The ones he has had permanent fall-outs with include Manoj Bajpai, Aftab Shivdasani, Randeep Hooda and Mohit Ahlawat.

Reacting to rumours of a patch-up with Bajpai, Varma retorts: 'Mere itne bhi bure din nahin aaye hain. (I have not fallen upon such bad days).'

Vivek even took the trailer of his new film 'Prince It's Showtime' to Hyderabad where he was shooting with Varma.

'Ramuji booked a theatre at the film city in Hyderabad to watch it. Not just that. I left the theatre after a while since late nights don't suit me. I had a shoot in the morning. But my director chose to stay on watching the trailer over and over again. Ramuji has always been a mentor. I'm sorry if I let him down in the past,' Vivek said.

Shatrughan Sinha, who forms the third element in the new Ramu-Vivek alliance, too watched the trailer with Varma.

Vivek just can't stop raving about Shatrughan, his co-star in 'Rakta Charitra'. 'He's so generous and warm. He makes me feel so special every day on the sets. He's an inspiration. I call him Super Sarkar. He's so larger than life. He's the only politician who is never politically correct.'

Vivek is gearing up for the release of 'Prince It's Showtime' which is rumoured to be a remake of the 1960s' Shammi Kapoor starrer 'Prince'.

'Ha, ha. I wish. People feel it might be a takeoff on Shammi Kapoorji in Prince, or they feel it is a costume drama. Let them see what it is. I don't want to give away the plot. Hats off to Kumar Tauraniji for having faith in me. I knew it would be risky. He pulled out all the stops to make Prince look lavish,' Vivek chortles.

Suriya and Priyamani to shoot for RGV's Hindi film

Maverick film-maker Ram Gopal Varma’s Raktha Charitra, a story about the life of the dreaded criminal Paritala Ravi, has been in the script stage for many years now. Finally, RGV is said to be ready with script and launch the film with Vivek Oberoi in the lead. Tamil superstar Suriya is to play a pivotal role in the film which would be a trilingual affair in Hindi, Telugu and Tamil.
Sources close to Suriya say that the actor is presently in Mumbai to shoot for Rakta Charitra.
The talented Suriya is learning Hindi fast to dub in his own voice. In an interview to an English daily, Suriya had said that though he studied Hindi, practical knowledge of spoken Hindi was a must for him to speak the dialogues fluently in the film. For this, he has a full-time assistant by his side. “When RGV narrated the script to me, I thought I ought to be part of this film,” says an excited Suriya.
Rakta Charitra will have Vivek Oberoi playing the title role of the rebel-turned politician Paritala Ravi, one of the most feared individuals in South India. Suriya will play the role of Suri, Ravi’s opponent.
According to sources, Suriya's role is almost equal to that of the lead protagonist. The sizzling Priyamani, quite popular in Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam movies, would play Suriya’s love interest in the film.
The film is produced by Madhu Mantena. Mani Sharma will be the music director. Others in the cast include Shatrughan Sinha, Radhika Apte, Subrata Dutta, Ashish Vidyarthi, Sudeep, Zarina Wahab, Raj Babbar and Ranjeet.
Ramu's Rakta Charitra in August
Ram Gopal Varma, one of the most maverick filmmakers of Indian Film Industry was present in Chennai to address media on his upcoming film Raktha Charitra. The film marks the debut of Surya in Bollywood and is getting dubbed in Tamil and Telugu as well.
The Tamil version has been titled as Raktha Charitra with Vivek Oberoi himself dubbing with his own voice as it happened with Prince.
Interacting with media channels on this film, Ram Gopal Varma admitted that it’s a film all about a man’s journey of 15 filled with vehemence and vengeance. On his part Surya added that the film belongs to everyone as even the characters with miniscule prominence will add more depth to this drama based on real incidents.
Bollywood’s heartthrob Vivek Oberoi takes on the role of Parithala Ravi and Surya as his rival Maddelacheruvu Suri.
Priyamani, who makes her debut in Bollywood with Manirathnam’s Raavan, enacts the role of Surya’s wife. Hindi Film Industry’s reigning superstar Shatrughan Sinha performs the role of Former Late AP Chief Minister NTR.
Na. Muthukumar has penned lyrics for a song that is based on Raktham (Blood) and former journalist Gnyanavel has written dialogues for the Tamil version.
The film’s post production works are close on the heels of completion and will hit screens simultaneously in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu by August.

Kites stripped Hrithik off his acting craft

Kites stripped Hrithik off his acting craft, literally, the actor confesses. Before minds work overtime, here is the story from the horse’s mouth. So it goes that in Kites Hrithik was enamored to work with actors from the west because it helped him evolve as an actor.
Hrithik admits with all honesty, “All the actors that I've worked with from the west have a whole new approach to acting and it just blew my mind completely. I was just stripped off all the craft and all I was left with was the art.

I was just challenging myself to rely on my instincts and my only checkpoint was whether I've done the shot from my heart or not.”
When asked about his experience on working with Barbara in particular, he says, “I've never worked with such a spontaneous actor in my life, there was a lot to learn.”
Hrithik got so comfortable with the working style of actors from the west that he did not watch a single shot of this film on the video assist, he only relied on his instincts. “I have evolved a lot because of this and all this came about because I saw how the actor's work there,” he concludes.
For Hrithik who is a perfectionist to the T, this must have been quite a thing to pull off!

Barbara Mori's bald and beautiful 'Kites' tales

When producer Rakesh Roshan and director Anurag Basu first met Barbara Mori for Kites story narration in Los Angeles, the actress just had inch long hair as she had gone completely bald for her role in a Spanish film.
She had just completed shooting for her film Cosas Insignificantes (Insignificant Things) that spoke of the intricacies of human relations. For her role, the Mexican beauty had shaved her head, because in the film, her screen son has cancer and is losing hair, so she expresses solidarity with him this way.

Producer Rakesh Roshan, who flew to Los Angeles to give Barbara a narration, admits that when he saw his future heroine with only one inch long hair, he was hesitant to sign her on. “I was aghast,’’ admits Rakesh. “I asked her how we would shoot with her six months down the line, but she was confident that her hair would grow or else she suggested that she would put hair extensions.’’
Director Anurag adds, “Barbara looked beautiful in short hair too. I had an option to have her with short hair in Kites, but in our industry actresses generally don’t have short hair. So later when she came to India, we did some look tests with Barbara in short hair and also with hair extensions and she looked even prettier in long hair.”
Thereon began the bald and beautiful tales of Kites!

The day Anurag didn't call the action director for Kites shoot

Kites, a love story packed with some dangerous action sequences, all of which have been done by Hrithik Roshan and Barbara Mori themselves. After shooting sequences where actors climbed on moving hot air balloon and hung from moving trucks, chased tumbling fire cars and many such... breaking a piece of glass appeared a small job to Anurag Basu...not knowing what the end result would be!

So the day when Hrithik was scheduled to shoot the scene of breaking a glass, Anurag discussed this with him who also agreed confidently do this by himself and the action director wasn’t summoned that day.

“We had done so many sequences without any injuries and there was a small scene where Hrithik had to break a glass and I didn't call any action director. I like to do most action scenes myself. So I cracked the glass and kept it for Hrithik to break, but when he broke the glass a big piece pierced into his wrist,” says Anurag.

Hrithik had to then be rushed to the hospital which left Anurag feeling highly guilty. “Hrithik got stitches in his hand and I couldn’t stop blaming myself for it, I was shaken up,” he admits.

Barbara's Hindi tuitions on the sets of Kites

Actress Barbara Mori had tuitions on Hindi everyday on the sets of Kites and no other than director Anurag Basu was at the helm of the affairs. He took the onus of teaching Hindi to Barbara, but little did Barbara know about what Anurag was teaching him.

For simple English words such as ‘good morning’ and ‘thank you’ Basu taught the actress bad words of Hindi. “Initially she didn't realize that she was learning bad words. So she would come to say good morning to everybody on the sets and say the bad word instead that we had taught her and to top it she would say it to everyone on the sets and that too loudly,” exclaims Basu.

While initially Barbara didn’t realize she was doing something wrong, after observing everyone’s reaction for 2-3 days on the sets, she figured something was amiss. Later when the actress was told the fact she was zapped but took it very sportingly.

But this is not the end of the story. The cross cultural collaboration came about when Barbara too taught some unit members words in Spanish without telling them what the actual meaning was. “To settle cores with me and the team, Barbara would teach us Spanish words and never tell us the actual meaning of the words she taught us, but some of us were quick enough to surf the net and cross check whether what she was teaching was correct. By the end, we knew a lot of Spanish bad words and Barbara knew a lot of Hindi but only abuses,” says Anurag.

This is what you call an international collaboration in Anurag’s words!
